Request Video
REQUEST VIDEO aired over 1200 episodes on KDOC-TV in Los Angeles weekday afternoons from 1989 - 1992, documenting the moment in music history when a generation of fans proved what was pop and what was popular weren’t necessarily the same thing. Before alt-rock, hip-hop, grunge and EDM stormed the charts, these artists had a home on REQUEST VIDEO — music videos, interviews and unpredictable live performances.
This revolution was televised by DIY punk kids working for a conservative TV station (owned in part by Pat Boone) in the shadow of Disneyland’s Matterhorn ride. Gia DeSantis and Jon Faulker, the two young KDOC staffers charged with producing, programming and directing REQUEST VIDEO, saw themselves as no different than the show’s audience. In turn, devoted fans throughout Southern California saw not just their music idols and up-and-coming artists, but a lot of themselves in that weekday hour. Which is why it endures today.
